What is Uninsured Motorist insurance, and do I need it?
Uninsured Motorist insurance or sometimes referred to as underinsurance coverage, is the insurance that protects you for injuries you sustain in an accident when you are not at fault for the accident. It not only covers you when the other driver doesn’t have insurance, it also covers you for any damages which exceed the tort-feasor’s insurance. Usually, UM coverage is an additional coverage of insurance which increases the premium charged by about 8%. It is highly recommended to add to your policy because it is the insurance that actually benefits you. Collision coverage, and BI covarge, which make up about 80% of the premium, is usually used to protect third parties. UM coverage, on the other hand, is used to protect you, the insured.
